Welcome to Sakhikamva Foundation

Building a future

Based in Cape Town, Sakhikamva Foundation is a registered non–profit organization involved in aviation awareness and skills development for the youth and children in the aerospace industry.

The Foundation believes that the future of South African aerospace industry is anchored with the country’s highly talented youth, its mission being to identify and develop this talent in ensuring that a solid foundation is laid to feed the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pipeline. It prides itself in building a future with the youth of South Africa and sets out to achieve its mission by hosting several programs and outreach projects each year. Come on board and join one of our exciting programmes.

STREAM Laboratory

The STREAM Laboratory is an interactive space where young minds can develop critical 21st century skills, tinker and explore everything STEM encompasses. The Laboratory has designated areas and themes such as the space lab, robotics lab, design studio equipped with 3D printers, flight simulators, host to a range of activities, school visits and STEM Clubs such as:

  • The World Robot Olympiad practice sessions (each laboratory hosts about teams that enter this international competition)
  • The FIRST® Tech Challenge Teams meeting place
  • FIRST® Lego League hub for teams
  • Host to the Exolab experiment in partnership with the International Space Station
  • Aviation and Space Clubs
  • Talks by local and international STEM role models such as NASA Astronauts

The STREAM Laboratory is a hive of activity where continuous learning takes place and grants youth and children opportunities to explore STEM activities with various resources available.

Our Programmes

goIT Challenge

Our journey with goIT started in 2020, in Komani Queenstown, since its inception we have reached over 6000 learners and teachers nation-wide. The vision of the golT program (sponsored by Tata Consultancy Services) is to strengthen communities today by empowering the digital innovators of tomorrow. This is done by demystifying Computer Science, practice Designing Thinking by means of an App Development assignment. Students then display their skills by working on a group pitch, presented to a panel of judges.

Paper Jet Challenge

The challenge tests the teams’ knowledge of engineering, aerodynamics, origami, and ingenuity by challenging you to construct paper airplanes that will be flight-tested by the team on the day of the competition.

Each team consists of 3 members whose paper folding skills are put through the test by competing in the time in the air, distance and design categories.

FIRST® Tech Challenge

We have 4 robotics teams part-taking in the FIRST® Tech Challenge, award winning team Astrovo (Cape Academy of Mathematics Science and Technology), award winning team SYRE Robotics Team (Goodwood College), rookie teams Galactic Einsteins and High Voltage. Learners are taught to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. The Challenge also incorporates community outreach, fundraising and places emphasis on the Design Thinking Process documented in an “Engineering notebook”.

FIRST® Lego League

FIRST® Lego League is another competition by FIRST® Robotics, this competition is usually guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and learners aged 4 to 16 years old are tasked to complete missions with their robot hosted annually.

World Robot Olympiad

World Robot Olympiad (WRO)

is an event combining STEM and robotics with the intention of bringing young people from all over South Africa to improve their creativity and problem-solving skills by using visual coding (Blockly).

Robotics kits such as Lego’s Spike Prime are usually the preferred choice equipment for learners to build their robot.
